Will Lynas (8Otter) was one of 36 students from a field of over 40,000 entries in his age range to be invited to the Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge Finals at Oxford University during the half term holiday. To progress to this stage is an outstanding achievement in itself.
Will’s family were invited to support him in the Finals at Oxford University – it was a fantastic day which Will greatly enjoyed – he writes the following: “I had a great time in Oxford. The final stage of the competition was challenging but still enjoyable. We had a Computer Science lecture about how computing is applied in everyday life. There was also the opportunity to look round two Oxford Colleges and walk over the famous Bridge of Sighs.”
What does computational thinking involve?
Computational thinking involves using a set of problem-solving skills and techniques that software engineers use to write programs and apps. Examples of these techniques would include the ability to break down complex tasks into simpler components, algorithm design, pattern recognition, pattern generalisation and abstraction.
